How Do You Construct A Tens Unit?
Unit blocks are used in math courses to help students visualize numbers and places for those numbers. Ones and tens units are used to help children see what 11, 14 and other numbers look like in reality. Judy Jones, who teaches first grade at May Overby Elementary in Aberdeen, South Dakota, explains how to construct tens units to use with students. She says that tens units usually come with the entire unit package, and that they are the length of ten “ones” squares put together. However, you can create tens units that are more visually stimulating by putting ones units together yourself. Separate your number units. With a typical math block set, you will have a 100 “ones”, which should be small squares, usually white. You will have “tens” which are long pieces, the length of 10 “ones” put together. You should also have pieces that equal 5, 20 or 50, depending on the set you have purchased. Put everything away, except for the “ones” pieces. Use wood glue to glue 10 “ones” pieces togethe
