There is perhaps nothing more rewarding than cooking in the backcountry on a demanding backpacking trip. However, constructing a camp kitchen still has to be done with care. The environment is the number one concern when constructing a camp kitchen. In order to safely create a cooking space in your camp while avoiding animals and minimally impacting the environment, follow these steps. Scout out the area surrounding your camp. The most durable site should be where you construct your camp kitchen. Big flat rocks are the best, but these aren’t always available so use your best judgment. Make sure your kitchen is not right next to where your tents ate pitched, especially if it is not winter. If there are animals of any kind in the area, and there almost always is some sort of animal in the backcountry, then you do not want to create the scent of food right next to where you sleep. If you are creating a bear-hang to store your food and scented items up in a tree in bear country, this shoul
