Flexible aluminum hose is often used to connect a clothes dryer to vent pipe that extends through an exterior wall. The metal-skinned version is preferable to vinyl flexible hoses because the plastic variety can rot and become flammable. Homeowners are most likely to encounter a flexible dryer vent when installing or repairing a clothes dryer. When doing so, the flexible pipe must form a tight, secure connection with both the exhaust vent of the appliance and the pipe that connects the laundry space to the exterior. Locate the vent pipe, a four-inch diameter round metal duct that projects about two inches from the wall. The vent is often near the floor, but may be higher on the wall in a basement installation. Locate the matching exhaust vent opening on the back of the dryer. Slip a hose clamp over the end of the flexible vent.
