Joining pipe sections together is an especially important part of a plumbing job; if it’s not done properly, these joints are the areas that are most likely to leak. Doing a good job on a joint becomes even more important when you are trying to join two different materials, especially those that differ in hardness such as PVC plastic and cast iron. Attach a threaded female cast iron pipe fitting to the end of the cast iron pipe you wish to join. Use a fitting with two female ends if the pipe has a threaded male end, or a fitting with both a male and female end if the pipe has a female threaded end. Wrap the male threads of the pipe or fitting with 3 to 4 turns of heavy duty Teflon tape, and screw the fitting onto the pipe tightening it firmly. Wrap the male threads of the PVC fitting with 3 to 4 turns of the Teflon tape. Screw the male PVC fitting into the female cast iron fitting and tighten it firmly. Clean the end of the PVC pipe you will be joining thoroughly. Swab a generous amoun
