How Do You Connect A GPS To A Marine Battery?
A marine GPS receiver is usually connected to a boat’s battery deep-cycle battery through the boat’s common power bus and common ground. The common power bus and common ground act like extensions of the power cord of the GPS, connecting to the battery through the boat’s circuit breaker box. The connection is relatively direct and protects the GPS receiver from power fluctuations that might damage the receiver while helping to prevent a tangle of individual wires leading directly to the battery. Connect the red wire from the GPS power cord to the common power bus of the vessel by unscrewing one of the vacant screws on the common power bus with a screwdriver, wrapping the bare end of the red wire around the screw, then turning the screwdriver clockwise to tighten the screw. The common power bus is usually found inside of the console or under the dashboard and looks like a long metal strip with screws along its length to which the electrical power cords of other instruments are attached.
