Firewalls act, as the name implies, like walls that keep potentially dangerous or damaging elements from entering computer systems. These devices are either in software (like Microsoft’s Windows firewall) or hardware form (like a router). These devices dictate what programs to allow and to prevent any other application from starting or others from entering the computer from the Internet. Windows Firewall is a the most common firewall available and is included in newer versions of the Windows operating system, such as Windows XP and Windows Vista.
