How Do You Conduct A Fun And Easy Science Experiment Related To Gas And Pressure?
Here is a fun and easy science experiment involving gas and pressure changes within an area when a candle burns. Observe the increasing water levels inside the glass as the candle goes out. Fix the candle to the center of the shallow dish using a small glob of clay. Small and inexpensive birthday candles work great for this experiment. Pour about half an inch of colored water onto the dish and light the candle. Carefully place the glass over the burning candle. You can use a fairly narrow glass, just be sure to avoid bumping the candle with the edge of your glass. Observe movement of water as the candle extinguishes. A burning candle requires Oxygen gas. The Oxygen is converted to Water and Carbon Dioxide during combustion. It is easy to assume that the experiment demonstrates oxygen being consumed by the burning flame. BUT, like most things in life, it is not that simple. The mass of the Oxygen gas is replaced by an almost equal mass of Carbon Dioxide gas. See the link below for a det
