How Do You Condition A Baseball Mitt?
A new leather baseball mitt is very stiff, causing problems when the player tries to use his hand to close the glove around the ball. The more flexible and workable a leather glove is, the easier it is for the hand to close. A glove that does not close properly will cause the ball to pop out instead of being caught. Another term to describe conditioning a baseball glove is “breaking in.” Clean the baseball glove with a damp towel to ensure that all surface dirt and oils from manufacturing are removed. Rub a small amount of leather conditioner into the glove using a damp towel. Use small circular motions to rub the conditioner into the palm, pocket and fingers of the glove. This will help loosen up the stiff leather. Place a baseball into the pocket or webbing of the glove. Tie shoestring around the baseball glove so that the baseball does not fall out and leave the mitt overnight in a warm location.
