Assigning a creative project as a method of assessment for a lesson plan is a positive way to take a break from the traditional memorization and regurgitation middle-school classroom method. Students are allowed to process what they have studied and apply it to their own creation. They also learn project and time management skills and, in some cases, how to work in a group.
