The VIN, or vehicle identification number, is a 17-character serial number that identifies a unique vehicle from all others. The VIN is usually located on a small engraved plate on the dashboard between the steering wheel and the windshield, but other plates may be located throughout the vehicle. By finding these plates on various parts of the car, and comparing them, you may be able to determine whether the car has been stolen or in an accident. Locate the VIN plate on the dashboard of the vehicle when you compare the numbers on other parts of the car. Use a piece of graph paper and a ruler to write the number so that you do not become confused while writing down the 17 letters and numbers.
