How Do You Clip A Dogs Toenails?
Keeping your dog’s toenails short is an important part to dog health and grooming. Overly long nails will begin to curl and cause the dog pain when he plays and walks. Dogs’ nails need to be clipped about once per month, but this will vary depending on the dog’s activity level and playing or walking surface. Concrete and asphalt wear toenails down as dog’s walk and run. Place the slip lead around the dog’s neck. Use a quick release knot to tie your dog to a sturdy, unmovable object, such as a latched door’s handle or a table leg. Stand next to your dog facing his tail. Pick up one of the dog’s front paws and bend it at the ankle so that the pad is facing up and the toenails are exposed. Gently grasp the paw in your hand and hold steady. Clip the toenails down close to the quick, or vein within the nail. Repeat for each paw. If you cut too close to the vein and it begins to bleed, dab the styptic powder on the nail. Hold a cotton ball on the nail for 30 seconds. Give your dog a treat.
