Clearing a clogged sink is one of the plumbing fixes that usually doesn’t require a trained plumber. In fact, almost everyone will encounter a clogged sink at some point, whether in a rental unit or an owned home. Fortunately, there are a number of techniques, devices and products to help remove clogs quickly and safely. When you are working on unclogging a sink, be sure to keep pets and children out of the area and to open windows to ventilate the area if possible, especially if using chemical drain uncloggers. Remove the drain stopper. Most stoppers can be removed by twisting the stopper to the left or right and lifting up. Remove any hair or other material that has accumulated on the stopper itself. Pour about 1 gallon of boiling water slowly down the drain. If the sink becomes backed up with the water, stop pouring.
