Sewage spills can bring illness to adults, children, and even animals that come into contact with it. It is important to clean and disinfect the affected area as soon as possible to prevent bacteria and harmful viruses from spreading to people or pets. Tetanus, leptospirosis, hepatitis A, gram-negative bacteria, cryptosporidium and giardia are some of the health problems that can result from exposure to sewage. Everyone involved in the cleanup must take safety precautions to reduce the chance of becoming ill from one or more of these health conditions. Wear goggles, rubber gloves, rubber boots and a dust mask. These items will prevent you from coming into direct contact with the sewage. Remove all furniture, rugs and everything else that can be moved from the area. Dispose of any carpets, rugs, carpet padding or other saturated items that cannot be completely cleaned and disinfected. Throw rugs with little spillage may be able to be washed and disinfected.
