How Do You Clean Tatami Mats?
Tatami mats are an Asian-inspired flooring option, made of a combination of grass (wara) or rice straws. These mats have a soft, natural feel that adds a subtle addition to your interior landscape. By properly cleaning and caring for the tatami mats, you will have an attractive flooring option that will last for many years without requiring replacement. Clean the mats regularly, and remove stains as they occur to keep your mats looking their best. Clean the mats each week with a vacuum cleaner or broom, whichever you prefer. With either cleaning tool, push the broom or vacuum with the weave of the Tatami, not against it. Sweep in one direction, and continue until all dirt is removed. Blot stains with a dry cleaning cloth. Absorb as much of the spill as possible. Rinse a clean cloth with cold water, and continue blotting. Turn over the mat, and clean the underside as well to make sure no stain dries onto the bottom of the mat or the underlying flooring. Allow the mats to air dry.
