How Do You Clean Smoky Fireplace Glass?
After repeated use of a wood burning fireplace or a gas fireplace, black carbon and soot deposits cloud the fireplace glass. Black glass prevents you from seeing the fire’s flame and looks unclean. The glass can be cleaned with the door still attached or with the fireplace door removed. Wait until the glass is completely cool. You will get better results and you will not risk burning yourself. Put on safety goggles, if desired. The cleaner’s fumes are strong and can sting eyes. Apply a small amount of the fireplace glass cleaner to a paper towel. You must use a cleaner that specializes in removing carbon from glass. The outside of the cleaner should say something about cleaning stoves or fireplace glass. Rub the cleaner onto the glass and make sure to apply to the edges and corners. Let the cleaner sit on the glass for about one minute. Rub the cleaner and black soot off the glass with a clean paper towel. If some black spots remain on the glass, repeat steps 2 through 4.
