How Do You Clean, Season, And Care For Cast Iron Cookware?
Cast iron cookware is nearly indestructable and can be passed on for generations. But, at the same time, it requires some special but simple attention to make it through the long haul. If you have inherited any old cast iron cookware, you probably realize what a treasure it is. Keep your cast iron pots and frying pans “seasoned” with these steps. Clean cast iron with soap only 1 (ONE) time – when you bring it home from the store brand new. The only other acceptable time to use soap is if your cookware has deteriorated to the point it needs to be re-seasoned (discussed in another step). A seasoned pot should be wiped clean with a cloth or towel. It is ok to run water in it, but remember to wipe it dry immediately and lightly coat with lard, especially if it is fairly new. The more it’s used, the easier to clean and the better it cooks. If properly cared for, you’ll begin to notice food doesn’t stick to it easily.
