When camping, backpacking or traveling abroad, a PUR backpack water filter will reduce your risk of contracting gastrointestinal illnesses from drinking contaminated water. Properly cleaning your filter will ensure efficient operation both during your excursion and once you return home and store it for later use. By pumping a mild chlorine bleach solution through the device, you can protect yourself against the growth of illness-causing microorganisms that can live inside a dirty water filter. Fill a 1-qt. container with water. Add 2 teaspoons of ordinary household bleach. Assemble your filter for use. Drop one end of the input hose and the pre-filter into the solution.
