The garbage disposal generally dices, slices and disposes of whatever we put down its mouth without protest. Certain materials, however, can cause a disposal to stall and jam. Fibrous materials like potato peels, metallic objects like staples and screws, plastic objects like shrink wrap, and plastic cups can jam the internal mechanism. These objects, if not removed, can even disintegrate internally through heat and pressure to create a plastic buildup. Insert the kitchen tongs or long-nose pliers into the disposal, after making certain the power is off or disconnected, and pull out as much of the lodged plastic debris or buildup as possible.
