How Do You Clean Lichen From A Marble Table?
Slow-growing lichen can be an unsightly addition to marble tables and other furniture. While lichen does not in fact eat away at stone, the acids secreted by its roots etch the stone, which then crumbles as the lichen’s fine, hair-like roots infiltrate it. The acids from lichen may also leave stains on marble; in most cases, these stains are permanent and cannot be removed. Rub as much lichen off the marble as you can with a rag, a sponge, a soft brush or even your hands. Cover any remaining lichen–along with the surface where any lichen that rubbed away had been growing–with several layers of black, heavy-duty garbage bags. Tape securely around all edges of the bags. The goal is to prevent all light and air from reaching the lichen. Wait a month, then lift one edge of the bags and check to see if any remaining lichen easily flakes off.
