How Do You Clean An Evaporator Coil?
Changing the filter is usually enough to keep the evaporator coil clean as the dirt will be trapped in the filter before it reaches the evaporator coil. In cases where the coil has become dirty and needs to be cleaned, one should consult the manual of the specific air conditioner unit to determine if this job can be done by a layman. Some units will require a professional to drain the coolant and completely remove the coil in order to clean it. Turn off the power to the air conditioning unit to avoid electrical shock. Open the cover of the evaporator coil. On most units, the evaporator coil will be located next to the fan. Check the manual of your particular unit if you are unsure of the location of the evaporator coil. Reach into the air conditioning unit and wipe the evaporator coil clean with a damp cloth. The rag should be damp but not dripping wet because dripping water onto the motor could cause damage. Replace the cover and turn the power back on.
