Keeping your pool filter clean is the key to clear, sparkling waters. When excess dirt and bacteria, such as algae, build up in the filter, it is redistributed into the water. In addition to keeping your water in tip-top shape, keeping your diatomaceaous earth pool filter well-maintained will protect your investment by keeping it functioning longer. While professional pool cleaners can be enlisted to clear out the filter, cleaning the filter at home is a relatively simple do-it-yourself project. Turn off the circuit breaker for the pool equipment to ensure it does not come on while you are cleaning the filter. Open the pressure valve on the filter to release the pressure inside the system. Remove the plug covering the drain from the bottom of the filter. Allow all of the water to drain. Open up the housing covering the filter and remove the diatomaceous earth grids. Spray the grids using a garden hose set on high. Continue to spray from the top to the bottom until all of the diatomaceo
