How do you gravel vac an aquarium that doesn’t have gravel?? If you have a sand substrate instead, it is actually just as easy to clean–though a bit different. Here are some helpful tips! Set an empty bucket next to your tank Remove all decorations from your tank Put the small tube end of your gravel vac into the bucket, and then place the other end inside of the aquarium Get as much water as you can into the gravel vac, and then move it back and fourth (somewhat vertically) until you get a good flow from the other end into the bucket. [If this doesn’t work you may have to start it by sucking on the other end, like you would a hose, while moving it up and down. Don’t worry, you won’t get water in your mouth!] Once you have the constant flow, stick the gravel vac into the sand about an inch or so, but keep it tilted somewhat horizontally.
