A deck can be a significant investment for your home. In order for the wood to last, it must be periodically cleaned and resealed. Cleaning with an oxygen bleach is environmentally safe, and it is color safe. Depending on the type of wood used, the deck’s ultraviolet exposure and amount of traffic, your deck might need to be cleaned every one to three years to keep it in the best condition. Sweep the deck surface with a broom. Remove loose dirt and debris. Spray the deck with the garden hose. Wet the entire surface. Pre-treat oil and grease stains with a wood degreaser. Dissolve 8 oz. of oxygen bleach in the gallon of hot water. Let the solution stand for five minutes. Apply the solution to the deck surface with a mop. Add solution to the spray bottle, and then spray it onto railings and spindles. Let the solution sit for 15 minutes after application. Scrub the deck surface and sprayed surfaces with a broom. Rinse the solution from all deck surfaces with the garden hose.
