Generally, mildew inside a washing machine tub is caused by not using enough detergent which allows dirt and germs to accumulate and mildew to form. It is recommended that a washing machine tub be cleaned after each use or at least once a week, and allowed to air out to prevent mildew growth. If mildew does occur, there are a few steps that may work to remove the musty smell from the machine. Wipe the tub clean of any visible lint or dirt, especially under the rim using a clean cloth and all-purpose cleaner. Fill the machine with hot water on the hottest setting possible, on the shortest wash cycle and the highest water level.
