The Vicks Cool Mist Humidifier 564B releases moisture vapor into a room to aid in breathing. The appliance, commonly used during cold and flu season, helps relieve congestion but can also be used in dry, arid climates to prevent nasal passages from drying out. Cleaning the appliance once a week prevents scale buildup from hard water and removes mineral deposits and mildew smells. Turn off the humidifier and unplug it. Lift the clear plastic tank and cover from the base unit, turn the tank over a sink and drain. Wipe down the inside of the tank with a clean cloth or paper towels. Fill the round basin in the base of the humidifier below the plastic water tank with distilled white vinegar and let stand for 20 minutes. Drain the vinegar into the sink and wipe the drain dry with paper towels or a clean cloth. This will remove scale and hard mineral deposits.
