Dust that has settled on your baseboard heater’s dissipation fins is what causes the smell the first time you turn on the heat for the season. To forgo that odor, you need to clean the heaters. This not only stops the smell, but it allows the heater to work more efficiently. The heat needs to be off before undertaking this task. To clean the baseboards, the covers need to be removed. This is easier than it sounds. Depending on which system you have, the cover is only held on end caps or by screws. The end caps just snap off or the screws can be found about every four feet along your baseboard. Once you unsnap or unscrew the baseboards, they come off with minimal force. Place the screws in a container so they do not get lost during this process. The cover can be wiped down with a damp cloth, both inside and out.
