Also, prepare a supply of tank water before you begin to clean. Gather fresh filtration media, a small pitcher, and a bucket. Put at least two quarts of fresh tank water in the small bucket. Set it aside. Turn off the filter, and unplug it from the electrical box. Remove the hanging filter’s sponge. Decide if you can clean it or if it you need to replace it. If you can clean the sponge, discard the filtration media inside it. If you cannot clean the sponge, replace it with the correct sponge cartridge. Put some tank water in a small bowl. If you can clean the sponge, rinse the sponge gently in the water. Refill the sponge with media, close it and set the sponge aside. Clean any algae from the filte
