It also seals and protects the fiberglass from the elements. Over time, however, the finish begins to oxidize and becomes dull and chalky if not cleaned and waxed regularly. You can clean a gelcoat by following these steps. Use a sponge or scrubbing pad to apply the cleaning solution using small circular motions. You can use an electric buffer for this step as long as you don’t position it in one spot for too long. Continue rubbing in one spot until you see some color on the sponge or scrubbing pad. This indicates that you’ve removed all of the oxidation and are down to the gelcoat. Move to an adjacent spot and repeat until you’ve cleaned the entire surface.
