I work at a bike shop doing sales and repairs. When we sell bikes, the general rule of thumb is to have the customer stand over the top bar of the frame. You should be able to fit about 3 fingers between your groin and the top bar. However, this is just a rule of thumb. If you really want a perfect measurement, go to your local bike shop. Even if you’re not buying a bike, they can usually measure you and tell you your size. If you’re buying your bike online, you should probably try the method described above. Bike shops are usually pretty friendly about that stuff. After your bike’s all ready to ride, take it back to the shop and have them adjust the bike for you, personally. They’ll change the handlebars, seat post, seat angle, stem, headset, and many other components for you. This will insure that you’ll get the most comfortable ride possible.
