If you’re going to carry things on your commute, you’re going to need packs. There are many options, both for those who bike lightly and for those who want to bring everything including the kitchen sink. Figure out how much stuff you’re going to need to bring on a regular basis: clothes, sack lunch, documents, bike tools. Consider a fanny pack, backpack or bike-messenger bag if you have less stuff. They are more economical because they don’t require a rack and can be used off the bike too. Determine whether you have too much stuff for a handlebar bag. They don’t require a rack, but too much weight in them can interfere with steering the bike. Select panniers (saddlebags) if you have lots to carry or if you don’t want anything on your back as you ride. They need a rack to hook onto but come in a variety of styles and sizes and can be taken off the rack easily. Get a pack that will withstand the weather you plan to carry it through. If you’re going to be in rain often, pick a waterproof
