How Do You Choose Omega-3 Food Sources Carefully?
Omega-3 fat is a desirable part of your diet because of its ability to suppress cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases and cancer, unlike omega-6 fats. Good omega-3 food choices are those that are not laden with lead or other cumulative heavy metals, have a higher concentration of omega-3 fats than omega-6 fats, and are environmentally conscious. Choose wild-caught over farm-raised fish. Because of cramped quarters, farm-raised fish can spread worms and other diseases more quickly than in the wild. Therefore, they may be fed high levels of antibiotics. The result is a lower ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 than what is found in wild fish. Consume smaller fish lower on the food pyramid, avoiding the large fish at the top of the food chain such as salmon, swordfish and tuna. One reason is because they are overfished. The other is that heavy metals accumulate at the top of the food chain. There are plenty of fish further down on the food chain than salmon and swordfish that have high omega-3
