You are putting together reading material for your homeschool (or other) student(s) and you want to know if the text is grade appropriate. Is there an easy way to tell? You betcha. Here’s how. Set up your Word 2007 to check the readability. Open up Word 2007 and click on the round Office button in the top left hand corner. Under the recent documents list in the dialog box that pops up, look for the ‘Word Options’ button and click it. In the next box that pops up, choose ‘Proofing’ from the left bar. In the third section down of the Proofing options (‘When correcting spelling and grammar in Word’), click on the box that says ‘Show readability statistics.’ Click ‘OK’ and your are ready to test the readability level of some text. Copy the text that you want to check. Text which works best is either from a web page, a Word document, or a short passage that can be easily copied and pasted from say a file (such as an unprotected PDF file).
