One of the core skills that every motorcyclist should have under their belt is the ability to check the level of the engine’s oil. Whereas automobiles offer the familiar dipstick to check the oil, most motorcycles are completely devoid of this feature. Harley-Davidson, it should be noted, still uses a dipstick on some of their models; however, the vast majority of the breed uses a “sight glass,” a round glass viewing port mounted on the side of the engine to indicate the oil level and condition. The sight glass speeds the oil check process up without having to get dirty. Warm your motorcycle to its operating temperature by starting the motor and letting it run for a few minutes. Alternatively, you could take your motorcycle for a short ride. This will warm the oil and allow it to flow better, providing you with a more accurate reading.
