Although most computers do not have a built-in method for determining fan speed, there are a number of free programs available online that can provide this important information. Navigate your browser to SpeedFan, a free program developed to report the temperature of your computer’s motherboard and your current fan speed (see Resources). Bookmark this page for future reference, then choose “Download” from the top menu bar. Click on the newest version available under the “Download” header. Follow the installation instructions after the download has completed. Once SpeedFan has finished installing, open the program. Give SpeedFan time to load properly, as it is taking diagnostics of your computer. When it has finished loading, you will see a main screen that contains information on current fan speed—displayed in rotations-per-minute (RPM)—and CPU heat.
