The thermostat is a key part of your electric furnace system. It saves money on energy bills by shutting off the furnace when it reaches the proper temperature. Some thermostats can be programmed to run the furnace at certain times during the day so you can have the house warmed up when you get home from work. Turn off the home’s main breaker switch. Open the thermostat’s front cover. Remove the thermostat by loosening the screws holding it onto the mounting plate. Be careful when handling the mercury-filled glass tube. Label each wire with masking tape so you will remember where to put it when installing the new thermostat. Loosen the screws holding the wire to the terminals. Unscrew the mounting-plate screws and remove it, making sure the wires do not slip back into the wall. A good way to prevent this is to wrap the ends of the wire around a pencil.
