The autoharp has a strange and captivating sound, producing a full, yet lilting quality. The harp consists of a hollow body with many strings, similar to those on a regular harp, only smaller. Most autoharps can be held and played comfortably. On the top of the strings is a partial cover with keys. These keys control spring-loaded bars under the cover. When depressed, the bars mute certain strings and allow others to vibrate when plucked, producing a chord. Different keys produce different chords. Changing the strings, due to wear and corrosion, is occasionally required. The process is relatively easy, with the right tools. Place the T-type tuner on the tuning peg of the string to be removed. Turn the peg slowly to release tension on the string. Continue to turn the peg until the string is completely loose. Remove the string from the end of the tuning peg.
