The starter in your Lexus LS400 is an integral part of the ignition system. The starter motor turns the crankshaft when starting your car, and disengages when the engine is running. If your LS400 is starting hard or not starting at all, the starter may be the source of your problem. Many auto parts stores will test your starter for you free of charge. You can purchase a new starter at an auto parts store or the Lexus dealership. Locate the battery in the front of the driver’s side of the engine. Disconnect the negative and positive battery cables from the battery terminal using a wrench. Loosen and remove the battery clamp with a wrench. Remove the battery from the car. Wait at least two minutes before beginning any work to allow the power system to discharge. Remove the cruise control actuator cover by lifting it upward out of position.
