How Do You Change The Power Steering Pump On A 1987 Ford Truck?
In 1987, Ford trucks came equipped with a power-assisted steering system. The power steering pump, which is belted to the engine pulley, pressurizes hydraulic fluid in the system. This pressurized fluid travels to the steering gear. Input at the steering wheel transfers down the steering column to the steering gear. Steering gear motion transfers to the tie-rods through the Pitman arm. High mileage or poor maintenance causes the power steering pump to wear out internally. Remove the fluid return hose from the pump with a wrench. Catch the fluid, as it runs out of the pump and the return line, with a catch pan. Remove the pressure hose from the pump with a wrench. Catch any fluid drips with the catch pan. Remove the bolts connecting the pump mounting bracket to the engine with a wrench. Pivot the pump into the belt to release the belt tension. Slide the belt off of the pump drive pulley. Remove the pump from the engine. Remove the adjuster bracket from the pump body with a wrench. Insta
