Water in the hot water tank is heated by upper and lower elements. When the water is not getting hot, it is necessary to know how to change a heating element in a hot water tank. If the water is tepid, the upper element is the one that is faulty. Hot water that only lasts a few minutes is an indication of a faulty lower heating element. Turn off the electrical power to the hot water tank at the circuit breaker. Turn off the cold water supply valve to the hot water tank. The shutoff valve will be near the hot water tank. Connect a garden hose to the drain spigot at the bottom of the hot water tank. Set the other end of the water hose outside. Make sure that children and pets stay away from the draining water.
