Windows uses the Filename Extension to tell the operating system what type of a file it is. We all know that a .DOC file is a Microsoft Word file while a JPG file is an image file. Our computer assigns these extensions for us and we seldom have to worry about them. There are times however when you need to change a filename extension. You can create problems when you start playing with filename extensions so make sure you really need to change them before you start. This process is specific to Windows XP. First go to your control panel and click on the Folder Options icon. If you are in the Category View, it will be under the Appearance and Themes heading at the lower right corner. Click on the View Tab in the Folder Options window. In the View Tab, look down to the entry “Hide Extensions for known file types” Remove the check from this box and click Apply in the lower right corner then close the window.
