Rip out the old carpet and carpet padding. Remove all tack strips, staples and nails. Clean thoroughly. If you’re lucky enough to have hardwood treads (the part you step on) all you may need to do is sand and refinish the wood. If not, proceed to the next step. If the staircase is open on one or both sides, remove the balusters. Measure the nosing, or the part of the tread that hangs over the riser, and mark the depth on top of the tread. Using a circular saw, remove the nosing. Use a flush cut saw and chisel for corners and other spots the cir
