The impeller creates a vacuum in the pump body, drawing water through the engine body. Changing the impeller is a common maintenance procedure, as, over time, it can become cracked and worn. Any home mechanic can tackle this project in an afternoon. Step 1 Locate the four mounting screws on the bottom of the motor holding the lower shroud on. Use the screwdriver to remove the screws and disconnect the shroud. Step 2 Slide the lower shroud off of the motor and then clamp it in the vice. Locate the bell-shaped water pump housing and use the socket wrenches to remove the mounting bolts around the corners. Slide the housing up and off of the transmission shaft and use a set of pliers to pull the impeller out of the housing.
