Changing the GE washer belt can be done in less than an hour. The belt runs from the motor to the transmission pulley which operates the agitator. The GE appliance has a panel on the back of the unit that allows for easy access. Because the belt of the GE washer is constantly moving during operation, it can wear out or break over time. You can replace the belt yourself and save the time and expense of having a repairman come out to fix the appliance. Unplug the electrical cord of the GE washing machine from the electrical outlet and move the washer away from the back wall so you can work behind it comfortably. Take the back panel of the washing machine off by removing the screws with a screwdriver and placing the panel out of the way. Locate the motor and water pump on the left side of the cabinet near the bottom and find the clamps that are attached to the coupler near the pump.
