Bath surrounds come in different shapes and sizes to conform to the design of the house. However, over time, the caulk that keeps water out from behind the surround itself needs to be replaced. Caulk comes in silicone- or latex-based compounds that seal joints in bathrooms such as sinks, faucets and bath surrounds. The purpose of caulk is to avert water leaks between the surround and wall. Caulking a bath surround is a straightforward task with the proper knowledge and tools. The required tools and supplies are available at a local home improvement store. Step 1 Remove the old caulking from the surround using the scraper. Do not push down, rather at an angle to get underneath the caulk to remove it. Remove any remaining caulk and clean the area well. Step 2 Lay a new bead of caulk no more than 1/4 inch wide directly into the joint between the surround and bathroom wall. Use the caulk gun.
