How Do You Catch Sunfish With Long Bamboo Poles?
The bamboo cane pole was a standard for fishermen for decades; however with the advent of fiberglass rods and reels, the cane pole went out of use. The bamboo cane pole is still manufactured with styles ranging in length from 8 to 16 feet; some are made to break down into two or three pieces for easier transport while others are kept at full length in one piece. These poles are good for catching sunfish with an advantage over spinning rods in that the bait can be directly delivered to the sunfish in small pockets in weed beds. Rig a bamboo cane pole by tying a braided line (20- to 30-lb. test) to the eye at the end of the pole, tie 2 feet of 4-lb. test monofilament leader onto the end of the braided line. Both lines together should be the same length as the pole. Tie a long shank, size 10 bait hook to the leader, clamp one or two split-shot lead sinkers a foot above the hook, and fix a plastic bobber to the line above the hook at the distance the bait needs to be under the water.
