How Do You Cast Concrete Porch Steps?
Casting concrete steps is tricky, and usually best left to a contractor to ensure they meet city codes for rise and run. However, using pre-assembled stair stringers is a way for the competent weekend warrior to construct concrete steps up to a porch without the help of a contractor. The stair stringers calculate the proper rise and run and create a simple template for pouring stairs. You can order stair stringers online or purchase them at a local home improvement store. Excavate the area where you are going to pour your steps with a large shovel. Level the area by compacting it firmly with the back of the shovel. Lay the stringers. Use shims and 2 by 4s on each side of the stringer in multiple places to support the stringer and keep it firmly in place. Use the porch as your top anchor. Lightly nail the stringer to the porch to keep it solidly in place at the top. Attach a 2 by 8 piece of lumber to the front of the stringer tightly using deck screws to form the front of each step.
