The presence of High Occupancy Vehicle lanes (HOV lanes) in northern Virginia has spawned a unique carpool system called “Slugging”. The HOV lanes on Interstate 66 or 95/395 from Prince William and Fairfax counties require 2 or 3 riders in each vehicle. Drivers pick up riders going to their destination (downtown DC, the Pentagon, Crystal City or Rosslyn). Using HOV lanes can cut 30 minutes to an hour (each way) off the daily commute. No money changes hands – the drivers need the riders to legally use the HOV lanes, and the riders need a driver. It works for both sides.
