How Do You Care For Slate Turkey Calls?
Many hunters utilize slate turkey calls in an attempt to attract a turkey within shooting range. If the slate surface of the call becomes slick from the oils in your skin or some other contaminant, it can interfere with the way that it sounds. Regular care and maintenance of this type of call is necessary for optimal performance. Sand the slate surface of your call with 220- to 240-grit sandpaper. Sand in one direction only. Never use a circular motion or a back-and-forth motion when sanding, as this can harm the slate surface and prevent you from making realistic-sounding turkey calls. Sand the striker tips with an emery board to remove surface dirt and oil. Sand in one direction only. Place your slate turkey call in a pouch or a plastic bag to keep it clean and dry. The National Wild Turkey Federation recommends that you store your slate call in a cool, dark place to avoid warping.
