Siamese Fighting Fish, or Bettas, originate in Thailand. They lived in rice paddies and were much less extravagant than the Betta of today. They were most likely brownish, or red with blue stripes down the sides. Bettas are a very flexible fish, as in they can live in many environments without becoming sick. They can live in small places because of their labrynth, an organ that is right behind the gills. It allows them to breath surface water and hold it there before coming up for another breath.It also allows them to be out of water for short periods of time if absoluteley nessasary. I recommend keeping ONE Betta in at LEAST a 1/2 gallon to gallon container suitable for a fish. Putting either a male-female or male-male combonation into a tank WILL result in the death of one of the fish. You could also keep a male betta in a community tank with fish that don’t look similiar to the betta and are not fin nippers that will hurt the bettas long, flowing fins like Tiger Barbs.
