The tropical tree plumeria, also called frangipani, produces fragrant flowers in a variety of shapes and colors. Plumeria rubra blooms in pink or red, plumeria alba produces white blooms and plumeria obtusa’s white blooms have yellow centers. Variegated flowers also exist. The thick petals of plumeria flowers hold up well, making the blooms popular for Hawaiian leis. This warm-climate native is frost-sensitive, though, and must spend at least part of the year indoors. Pot the plumeria in a large (14- to 16-inch diameter), light-colored tub or ceramic pot with drainage holes. Light colors reflect heat and prevent the plant’s roots from burning.
